ABOUT THE SESSION: With membership now topping 400, it is more important than ever that we get to know each other. Notaries of the Round Table allows exactly that. Over the course of the afternoon, registrants will have the opportunity to visit 6 tables to hear from experienced members and industry stakeholders, to share ideas and experiences, and to meet and greet those you may not know.
  • Members will receive ONE credit for each table they attend.
  • Member should attend SIX tables within the allotted times.
  • Table selection will be on a first come first serve basis on the day of the session
Table 1: John Mayer & Jessie Vaid, The Society of Notaries Public of British Columbia.
The Society is in transition and has become the sole Registrar and Regulator for BC Notaries. John and Jessie will describe the responsibilities of The Society, including;
  • the way people will be admitted to The Society,
  • the Master of Arts in Applied Legal Studies (MA ALS) program,
  • the Practical Training Program, and
  • the role of the Regulator in serving the public interest.
Table 2: PAL
Staff Lawyer Ron Usher will talk about PAL, answer your questions, and advise how they can assist you in your practice.
 
Table 3: Hilde Deprez - Personal Planning
Discuss tips and tricks for interviewing and drafting Wills, PoAs and Rep Agreements with Hilde Deprez, Personal Planning Practical Training instructor for SNP students.
 
Table 4: Daniel Boisvert and Morrie Baillie, BC Notaries Association 
President Daniel and Vice President Morrie will discuss our new Trade Association and answer all your questions regarding the Association’s purpose and plans and how it will advocate for members.
 
Table 5: Todd McKendrick - How do you determine if your client has or lacks capacity?
A client has made an appointment to get her will drafted.  You immediately have concerns about her psychological capacity. What do you do now? Todd was legal counsel for the society for over ten years and defended many notaries in lawsuits concerning capacity issues. 
 
Table 6: Cyber Insurance and Fraud Insurance
Representatives from Marsh Canada and Chubb Insurance Canada will be on hand to share real-life examples about how fraudsters can get at your data base and your clients’ information. They will provide suggestions and solutions on how to protect yourself.
 
Table 7: Joan Letendre - Standards
As a proactive Regulator, the Society is committed to helping Notaries achieve the highest standard of service to inspire public confidence. To help you maintain professional competence, the Society provides practice advice, practice reviews, as well as best practice materials. In the coming months, the Society will be establishing practice and ethical standards to further assist Notaries in ensuring client satisfaction. Joan Letendre will discuss this new initiative.
 
Table 8: Quang T Duong - File Reports 
Quang will discuss:
  • the purpose of File Reports,
  • how to submit a request,
  • what do to when you receive a request, and
  • what not to do when you first receive a request.
Table 9: Everything you have always wanted to ask the Registrar
Larry Blaschuk, Registrar of the New Westminster Land Title Office, will address this topic, advise on some of the coming changes to the LTSA, and answer your questions.
 
Table 10: Tammy Morin Nakashima - Charge an appropriate fee for your Professional Notarial Services
Tammy Morin Nakashima has been a successful Notary since 1995.  At this table discussion Tammy will introduce you to her solutions regarding how to structure her fees for various work and will share with you her successful responses to clients who complain about fees.
 
Table 11: The Apostille with Professor Peter Zablud
Professor Peter Zablud, Director of Notarial Studies at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia, is recognized as one of the leading experts regarding notarizing documents for international use.
Your client insists he needs an Apostille.
  • What is an Apostille?
  • Why can’t BC Notaries issue them?
  • How does most of the world handle International documents?
Table 12: What is this new Land Owner Transparency Registry?
BC Notaries will be responsible for registrations in this new Registry.
  • When will it be effective?
  • How will you register documents?
  • How will you learn how to use it?
  • What is the purpose of the Registry?
Representatives of the LTSA will discuss all the implications and responsibilities of this new piece of Legislation and the Registry that will be operated by the LTSA.
 
Table 13: What’s new with Title Insurance?
Representatives from title insurance companies will host this table and be on hand to discuss the changes.
 
Table 14: What’s up with that appraisal?
Christina Bhalla, Executive Director, BC Association Appraisal Institute of Canada, will host this table and discuss all aspects of appraisals and how they affect a purchase and a mortgage for your clients.
 
Table 15: Trust Accounting – Keeping Proper Records
Society Notary Leanne Rebantad will discuss trust accounting issues as discovered through trust audits and self-audit reports
